Gushing Steve Evans blown away by ‘best ever’ Birmingham City

The Rotherham United manager saw first hand how good Chris Davies’ Birmingham City are – and he was bowled over by their quality.

Steve Evans spent the build-up to Rotherham’s game against Birmingham City teasing the big-spending promotion fancies.

More than a week ago, the Scot referred to Chris Davies’ team as ‘Real Birmingham’, a reference to European champions Real Madrid’s star-studded approach.

Then, on Thursday, he referred to them as ‘Galacticos’ following a transfer window in which the Blues broke the League One record by adding Jay Stansfield to an already talented side.
Evans was even more impressed after his side was summarily dispatched at the New York Stadium, thanks to first-half goals from Stansfield and Tomoko Iwata.
He stated, “They’re the best League One team I’ve ever seen with the way they pass and move.” They are a fantastic team full of talented young players.

“We make absolutely no excuses. We couldn’t touch them. They were a lot better than us. I thought we had bad stretches but started well. Their goal was against the flow of play.

“We changed it at halftime and became more disciplined.” We were thoroughly beaten. I will not make any excuses. Birmingham’s defeat will not define our season. We have learned a lot of lessons. “We will regroup and prepare for the next games.”
