Fresh Jota nightmare, spiky Kvistgaarden transfer address and forgotten £15m payday resurfaces

It has been a busy week for Brendan Rodgers and the Scottish champions.

Jota, a Celtic winger, has left the club due to an injury sustained while playing for Stade Rennes.

The 24-year-old concluded his terrible term in the Saudi Pro League last summer, only 12 months after a £25 million move away from Glasgow’s east end. He made few appearances for Al-Ittihad after being dropped from the foreign player list almost immediately, and is now attempting to restart his career with the Ligue 1 club.

However, he now faces a stint on the sidelines following only two outings off the bench for the French. Going into Saturday’s match against Lens, manager Julian Stephan admitted he couldn’t predict when the 25-year-old would return to action: “Jota may be too weak for this weekend. He has a muscle problem, and we are on guard. It remains to be seen when he returns.

While the Portuguese player is a distant memory for Celtic fans, Mathias Kvistgaarden appeared to be a potential future signing. The Brondby star has been on the Parkhead radar for the past year, but a deal has yet to materialise.

And the 22-year-old looked angry, implying that bids came in the summer but the Danes’ asking price was too high. When asked by Viaplay about the possibility of leaving, the forward stated, “Of course, there has been something, but now I’m here.”

“What you read on the internet isn’t always factual, but it’s no secret that I’ve always wanted to go outside of Denmark. It didn’t happen in this window, but as you can see from my reaction on the pitch, I don’t think it’s anything I’m struggling with in my thoughts.

When asked if he was disappointed that an offer had not been accepted, he replied, “Yes.” There is no doubt about that; like I have stated, I hope to play outside of Denmark someday. But once again, I’m throwing the Brondby shirt over my head and battling for the fans and my teammates—those are the two things I battle for.”

And, while Celtic is increasing their financial balance in the Champions League, Chelsea may be about to do the Hoops another benefit.Jeremie Frimpong has been pursued by clubs around Europe, with the Scottish champions likely to receive 30% of any sale by Bayer Leverkusen.

According to Foot Mercato, Todd Boehly’s shopping frenzy will continue in January, with a transfer to the Netherlands international. The Blues are reportedly mulling a bid of around £50 million, with Paris Saint-Germain also showing interest. If the Bundesliga heavyweights accept the agreement, Celtic Park will receive a cool £15 million.
