Evangelos Marinakis wants Nottingham Forest repeat after silencing ‘laughing’ doubters

Nottingham Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis has big ambitions for the Reds after achieving success with Olympiacos

Evangelos Marinakis, Nottingham Forest’s owner, wants to bring European football back after the Reds have established themselves in the Premier League.

The Reds have a long history of contending on the largest platforms. Marinakis hopes to restore the double European Cup champions’ glory days.
He understands what it takes, having led Olympiacos to Europa Conference League triumph last season. The Greek giants, who are also owned by Marinakis, defeated Fiorentina in May to become the country’s first European champions.

That victory has only fueled Marinakis’ ambitions for Forest. As the Reds attempt to progress in the top division this season under head coach Nuno Espirito Santo, the ultimate goal is to take the next step.

“Why not?” We did it with Olympiacos, and it was the first time a Greek team had won the European Cup. Marinakis told the BBC, “We were the underdogs; nobody believed it.”

“All these years, when I predicted that we (Olympiacos) would finally win a European title, many people laughed. This is great because it means less competition. It’s better to be underestimated. “We did it.”Why not? Nottingham Forest have an excellent team. If we play well in the Premier League and qualify for a European competition, why not?

“We have everything we need to complete the journey. I firmly believe that. But the main goal is to play well in the Premier League, and if Europe arrives, we will look forward to performing (there).

Marinakis’ vision for the future of Trentside is especially painful as it coincides with the 20th anniversary of Brian Clough’s death. The Reds great, who memorably supervised back-to-back European Cup victories, died on September 20, 2004, at the age of 69.
