How is ex-Watford FC star Yaser Asprilla getting on at Girona?

How is ex-Watford FC star Yaser Asprilla faring at Girona?

Yaser Asprilla for Watford

Yaser Asprilla appeared to be an intriguing addition when he moved from Colombian club Envigado to Watford.

Prior to Joao Pedro’s £30 million transfer to Brighton and Hove Albion last year, the Hornets were already successful in the South American market.

Although it was unknown how he would adjust to life at Vicarage Road, his signing for about £2 million at the age of 18 demonstrated his high value.

Fans had great expectations for him when he officially arrived in January 2022, given the agreement was purportedly signed while he was only 17 years old.

And it wasn’t long before he was a regular first-team member, with the player possibly benefiting from the club’s relegation back to the Championship.

Several offensive players, notably Ozan Tufan (previous loanee), Philip Zinckernagel, and Joshua King, left in the summer of 2022, which may have helped Asprilla establish himself as a prominent squad player in Hertfordshire.

He may not have been lethal in the final third during the 2022/23 season, with only one goal and two assists across all competitions, but he was able to accumulate 39 competitive appearances, which assisted him significantly last season.

During the early parts of last season, the Colombian was linked with transfers to Brighton and Newcastle United, highlighting his popularity among elite teams.

And interest in his signing will have grown as the 2023/24 season continued, with the player stepping up significantly following the departures of Pedro and Ismaila Sarr to establish himself as one of the Hornets’ most important offensive players.

Appearances 47

And with the 20-year-old concluding the season with six goals and eight assists in all competitions, indicating that he will go on to reach his potential, some speculated that he would leave during the 2024 summer transfer window.

Yaser Asprilla’s Move to Girona

Michel Girona

During the previous window, Asprilla attracted attention from Lyon, Leicester City, and Rennes among others.

After the latter’s offer fell through, the Colombian player joined Girona of La Liga.

Finishing third at the conclusion of last season, Michel’s team is establishing itself as a true power in Spanish football, and they made some astute signings over the summer.

Arnaut Danjuma, Bryan Gil, Bojan Miovski, Abel Ruiz, and Donny van de Beek joined Asprilla for a reported €24 million.

According to The Athletic, €18 million has been paid upfront.

How Yaser Asprilla is now getting along in Girona

The 20-year-old was not selected in their matchday squad for the first game against Atletico Madrid on August 25th, which was fair given that he had only signed a few days previously.

However, he was picked to their teams for the following three league games, when he appeared as a replacement, with little opportunity to make an impression.

However, the Colombia international will benefit from this experience, since he has previously faced FC Barcelona, a historic team that is still regarded as a powerhouse of Spanish football.

Girona lost the game against Hansi Flick’s team, but they won the other two games in which Asprilla featured.

And, while the attacker has yet to score or assist for his new team, he hasn’t had a good run of games to establish a rhythm.

It will also take him time to adjust to a new nation and league, since La Liga is a step up from the English second division.

The player appears to be enjoying his time in Spain, as he has already uploaded three Girona-related Instagram posts during his early stay.

It will be interesting to observe how he progresses in the next months and years.
