Kyril Louis-Dreyfus now told what will keep Sunderland 'away from the Premier League'

Sunderland has been advised that their current transfer plan would not get them promoted to the Premier League.

Sunderland have hired new manager Regis Le Bris for the 2024/25 Championship season due of his ability to develop young players.

The Frenchman worked in the Lorient development coaching setup for nearly a decade before being appointed first-team coach for the French side.

Sunderland sought Le Bris because of their squad’s average age of 23, which underperformed previous season, finishing 16th.

Kyril Louis-Dreyfus and Kristjaan Speakman have signed veteran Championship players Simon Moore and Alan Browne to the team. However, Wearside’s younger players remain primary focus, with Moore tutoring rookie goalkeeper Anthony Patterson.

Sunderland has maintained its attitude of favoring young players in the team, which ex-Sunderland player Don Goodman has criticized.

Don Goodman on Sunderland philosophy: ‘They will stay with’

Former Sunderland striker Goodman has remarked on the club’s transfer policy and current management selections.

Goodman stated in an interview with the Sunderland Echo that Sunderland has a clear ideology that they will stick to regardless of the circumstances.

“Whatever happens, they will continue to purchase young, develop, sell, and repeat.

“They risked by firing Tony Mowbray, and it failed. They gambled on Mick Beale, and it failed. They even risked by leaving Mike Dodds in command for the remainder of the season, which failed. It is a huge mess.

“Sunderland is a huge club that I adore and holds a special place in my heart. However, keeping to their mentality, in my opinion, will keep them out of the Premier League.

Sunderland manager Le Bris emphasized the importance of efficient team development, indicating that Kyril Louis-Dreyfus may adopt the same approach.

Should Sunderland forsake its concept of signing young players?

Sunderland has secured the futures of 17-year-old Chris Rigg, who signed his first professional contract with the club, and Jobe Bellingham, who stated his wish to continue on Wearside for the 2024/25 Championship campaign. Both were significant contributors last season.

Sunderland’s younger players, such as Jack Clarke, Patterson, and Bellingham, provide significant value to the club and would command a premium price if moved.

In terms of financial management, the strategy has supported the club and appears to have provided them with decent financial stability heading into the new season, although any desire to compete in the Premier League in their current position would be a little unrealistic.

Balancing young purchases with Championship experience might offer Sunderland the best opportunity of gaining promotion, which appears to be in the early stages with their recent additions.

However, several fresh faces will be required on Wearside ahead of the next season, particularly Championship leaders, which are unlikely to materialize at this time.
