Sky Sports £40m striker Wolves wanted in 2022 could come back to haunt them this weekend.
Wolves forward Matheus Cunha is maturing into the outstanding talent they signed from Atletico Madrid at the beginning of 2023.
Cunha was important once more on Saturday, scoring two magnificent goals and assisting Joao Gomes in Wolves’ 4-1 victory over Fulham. Alan Shearer dubbed Cunha’magnificent’ for his progress to become a remarkable Premier League player, with the 25-year-old contributing 10 goals and three assists in 12 games this season. While Cunha is already drawing transfer interest from ‘big clubs’ following his fantastic form in the past year, Gary O’Neil must keep the forward at all costs.
The former Atletico Madrid player is one of three Brazilians at the club right now, with Gomes and Andre also shining in gold, but Wolves could have had a fourth if one transfer target arrived in 2022.
Wolves almost signed Bournemouth striker Evanilson in 2022. Wolves were looking for Raul Jimenez’s long-term replacement in the summer of 2022, as the Mexican had struggled in front of goal and was about to go. Bruno Lage’s hunt for a striker led him to Porto centre-forward Evanilson, who was also on Manchester United’s radar at the time. Wolves expressed interest in signing Evanilson, but the Portuguese giants demanded an eye-watering £68 million for the Brazilian, which was far out of their price range.
