“Lost his passion” – Watford takeover prediction made concerning Gino Pozzo

Supporters may be confused as to why the team is now the league’s lowest spenders when they were a well-established Premier League regular at the conclusion of the previous ten years.

Lowest estimated transfer expenditure – Championship 2024/25 (as per Transfermarkt)
Position Team Expenditure Income +/-
20 Blackburn Rovers £3.98m £11.12m £7.14m
21 Sheffield Wednesday £3.94m £330k -£3.61m
22 Preston North End £3.84m £0.00 -£3.84m
23 Oxford United £3.17m £0.00 -£3.17m
24 Watford FC £2.72m £24.9m £22.18m

Pozzo’s interest in the club has been questioned, especially because supporter relations are at an all-time low.

When asked if he had a gut hunch that Pozzo will sell the team soon, FLW’s Watford fan analyst Justin Beattie said that he thought significant changes would be coming.

“I believe the Hornets desperately need a new takeover.

We must keep in mind that Gino Pozzo has done a great deal for Watford Football Club. We have a beautiful stadium that was only three sides when he arrived, we were in the Premier League for five years in a row, we advanced to the FA Cup final, and we have seen some excellent, thrilling players at Vicarage Road while he was there.

We must thus be grateful for many of the things he has given us, but we must also be aware of the managing whirlpool, some of the dubious manager hires, and dubious terminations.

“He appears to have lost interest in Watford and may have distracted himself from the team, which has left us without a strong team. We will never make progress if it keeps continuing the same way as it is now.

“I don’t think it’s a secret that I believe he is attempting to sell the club. In my opinion, he is pursuing funding and/or a possible buyer to acquire the club. But there aren’t any billionaires waiting in line.

“But I do think it will happen, and the process could well already be underway.”

While making sure to emphasize the positive aspects of Gino Pozzo’s nearly 13-year career, Beattie shares the view of many Hertfordshire club supporters that it might soon be time to end his reign naturally.

Vicarage Road supporters may be forgiven for quietly anticipating the opening of a winter war chest, with the intention of supporting Tom Cleverley’s outside chance of pursuing play-off promotion, after an incredibly thrifty summer produced mediocre results in the first half of the season.

However, it is debatable whether the team has improved at all, as the only significant permanent transfers were the departure of Ken Sema and the arrival of goalkeeper Egil Selvik. Supporters must be wondering where exactly the money is going after Yáser Asprilla’s high-profile departure in late August, but this is not an isolated instance, as Transfermarkt estimates that the club’s three-year balance sees them hold over £100 million in positive surplus that has yet to be redistributed into the club. The club’s overall transfer spending has decreased year-on-year since 2021/22, and while the chance to depart amicably may have passed, it is becoming increasingly evident that Pozzo’s time in Hertfordshire may be coming to an end.
