A Leeds United favourite admits that his move to Everton was “not great” and tells how a disagreement with the management caused it.
Nigel Martyn, a former custodian for Leeds United, has opened up about the argument that ultimately resulted in his transfer from Elland Road to Everton.
Martyn was a seven-year Leeds player and is still regarded as one of the greatest ever. Despite making 265 appearances between the sticks for the Whites, he was not able to hold the top spot during his last campaign.
Unlike many of his fellow international players, Martyn did not receive the same respite when abroad with England for the 2002 World Cup.
According to Martyn, who was speaking on the well-known podcast Undr The Cosh, “It wasn’t great.” I had participated in every Leeds game that season, was fortunate enough to be selected for the World Cup team, travelled to Japan and [South] Korea, and advanced to the quarterfinals.
