Arne Slot’s ‘soft’ claim disputed by rival manager after Liverpool controversy
In response to Arne Slot’s “soft” allegation, Wolves manager Vitor Pereira has stated that Ibrahima Konate ought to have been sent off during the first half of Sunday’s Premier League match at Anfield.
Referee Simon Hooper only gave a free kick and did not remove the France center back, even though Konate was already on a yellow card when he brought down Matheus Cunha.
Konate was subsequently substituted off at halftime by Slot, who maintained that he would not have merited a second yellow.
The Liverpool manager acknowledged, “Yes, I took him off because of that.” For me, it was a gentle yellow since I witnessed him receive his first yellow. He would have been sent off by two soft yellows if he had received the second one for a shoulder push, which would also have been a soft yellow.
Pereira, however, responded, “Yes, of course,” when questioned about his thoughts on the choice. Perhaps the game would be different if there were a second yellow card, a red card, and one fewer participant. I’m not a referee, though. I’m not here to make a decision. However, I’m ultimately quite pleased and proud of my second-half players.”
In the second half, there was further controversy after Diogo Jota seemed to
As Jota moved to his right in the 57th minute, Emmanuel Agbadou was first given a penalty for what appeared to be a foul.
Replays, however, revealed that the Portugal international’s foot clipping the Wolves defender’s body was the only touch. Jota also escaped a yellow card for simulation, although the video assistant referee correctly stated that the ruling need to be overturned.
“VAR checked the referee’s call of penalty to Liverpool for a challenge by Agbadou on Jota and deemed any contact was not initiated by Agbadou, therefore recommended an on-field review,” the Premier League’s match center clarified. Play resumed with a drop ball after the referee reversed the initial ruling.
Luis Diaz gave Liverpool the lead early on with a goal, and Mohamed Salah scored a penalty in the 37th minute after Diaz, a Colombian international, was fouled by Wolves goalkeeper Jose Sa.
Early in the second half, Salah also had a goal rightfully disallowed for offside, but just after the Jota penalty call was overturned, Cunha scored a goal of his own.
However, Slot’s Reds managed to hold on for the victory, regaining their seven-point advantage over Arsenal, who were in second place. On Wednesday night, Liverpool will take on Aston Villa.
