Wrexham and Reading players react to Sam Smith’s first goal since club-record transfer
Wrexham’s EFL Trophy victory on Tuesday night brought them one step closer to Wembley, but on Saturday they had to return their focus to League One play.
The team led by Phil Parkinson, who is aiming for a third consecutive promotion, easily defeated Northampton Town 2-0.
After Mark Howard sent a long ball forward, Sam Smith scored Wrexham’s opening goal by tapping it in.
With Wrexham’s second goal, Ollie Rathbone continued his incredible season, securing all three points away from home. Wrexham has now won four straight games across all competitions, three of which have come away from home as they begin to overcome their away day problems. Rathbone has received praise from James McClean, but Smith, a striker, naturally caught everyone’s attention with his first goal. Wrexham paid a club-record fee to sign Smith, spending seven figures to entice him to the STōK Cae Ras.
