The £40m missing from surging Celtic financials as booming transfer influx signals seismic bank balance

The club had a busy summer, although a number of transfer agreements failed to make the yearly accounts.

Celtic’s recent financial results show a £77 million bank balance, although the genuine sum is likely higher.

Brendan Rodgers’ side won the league and Scottish Cup last season, and their results up to June 30, 2024 demonstrate the benefits of playing in the Champions League and their domestic domination. However, due to a busy summer window, a lot of deals were left off the list. The £2 million banked for Sead Haksabanovic when he left for Malmo occurred before the deadline and is included in the results, although a number of big agreements are absent from the payoff.

Oh Hyeon-gyu left Genk immediately after the Montenegro international, but the club’s £4.5 million fee for the player will be added to the total for next year. Last summer, the departures of academy graduates Bosun Lawal (£3 million), Rocco Vata (£237 thousand), and Daniel Kelly (£400 thousand) helped boost Parkhead’s finances.

The biggest selling of the window was Matt O’Riley’s £26 million transfer to Brighton, while Mikey Johnston left on deadline day for West Brom for another £3 million. Tomoki Iwata also departed the club during the latter days of the transfer window, joining Birmingham City for an undisclosed price. In addition, minor fees for players such as Yuki Kobayashi and Benjamin Siegrist increased Celtic Park’s finances.

The Parkhead board was not bashful about spending money, and a slew of newcomers signed on too late to be reflected in the accounts. Goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel joined for free, while backup Viljami Sinisalo came in for £1 million from Aston Villa.

Paulo Bernardo (£4.5 million) and Adam Idah (£9 million) have made their loan deals with Benfica and Norwich City permanent. Celtic reserved their big money acquisitions until deadline day, with Arne Engels signing for £11 million, breaking the Parkhead transfer record, and defender Auston Trusty joining from Sheffield United for £5.5 million. Luke McCowan completed the summer spending binge with a £1 million deal with Dundee.

While they spent £32 million on incoming acquisitions, they hauled in more than £40 million in agreements over the summer. That leaves at least another £8 million to add to Celtic’s burgeoning bank balance.
