Rangers striker was “better” than Morelos, then he got sold 6 months later

Glasgow Rangers hit the jackpot when they signed Alfredo Morelos in the summer of 2017.

The Rangers striker went on to score 124 goals and 57 assists in 269 appearances across all competitions for the club before leaving in 2023.

They signed a slew of other number nines over the years in an effort to replace the Colombia international, who now plays for Nacional in his home country, and they may have thought they had struck gold with the signing of Antonio Colak.
The Croatian striker had a fantastic first season at Ibrox, and was even compared to Morelos, who was still at the club at the time.

Colak hailed as better than Morelos

Aberdeen captain Anthony Stewart declared in January 2023 that Colak is a “better striker” than Morelos due to his all-round ability, having faced both in the Scottish Premiership.

The Light Blues had bought the Croatia international from PAOK the previous summer for a reputed amount of £1.8 million, and he had a terrific start to his career in Scotland.
Colak had 11 goals and three assists in 15 Premiership matches, as well as three goals in four Champions League qualifiers, at the time Stewart made his comment.

Morelos, on the other hand, has never scored more than 12 Premiership goals in any of his last four seasons with the club, highlighting how brilliant the Croatian ace’s first half of the season was.

Colak’s decline at Rangers

Following Stewart’s comments, Colak only made 10 more Premiership appearances for the Hoops, scoring three goals, two of which came in the same game against Hibernian, but not providing an assist.

Beale then opted to cash in on the 31-year-old centre-forward ahead of the 2023/24 season, and Parma stepped in to settle a £2.5 million deal with the club.

Colak’s struggles in front of goal continued last season, with only three goals in 22 Serie B matches for Parma. He was sold to Spezia in the same league after one year, and has only played eight minutes this season. These statistics suggest that Rangers were right to sell Colak after his second-half-of-the-season woes at Ibrox, as he has yet to recapture his goalscoring form.
