Everton 1-1 Southampton (5-6 on pens): Saints win nervy shootout to book Carabao Cup fourth round spot and heap more misery on Toffees at Goodison Park.

When Everton lost to their fellow Premier League struggling team in the Carabao Cup penalty shootout, Ashley Young missed.

Alex McCarthy stopped Young’s penalty kick to end a terrible night for the 39-year-old. When he came in as a second-half substitute, supporters who were upset that striker Beto had been taken out jeered at him.

The veteran’s luck ran out when his spot-kick was struck at a comfortable height for the custodian to save, but he was fortunate not to give up a penalty when he challenged Tyler Dibling in the final minute.

A victim of injuries and illness, Everton’s Abdoulaye Doucoure had opened the goal, but Taylor Harwood-Bellis had levelled for the visitors earlier in the contest. It was a story about two captains.

Dyche, who gave Harrison Armstrong, then 17 years old, his first start, said, “We had to piece a team together.” Regarding the jeers, he remarked, “He (Young) is a mentally tough customer.” Youngy is mature and astute enough to understand the workings of this industry.

At Everton’s cost, Southampton secured their spot in the Carabao Cup four round.

With eighteen changes between them, neither team had picked up a single league point this season. Despite Dwight McNeil starting at left back, Everton had a better opening half of play.

McCarthy stopped Beto, but he made a costly mistake at a McNeil corner after 20 minutes.

Michael Keane received the ball when it broke, and he nodded into the box, where Doucoure met it with a glancing header.

Southampton had the ball 75% of the time.

The leveller arrived from a set-piece. Harwood-Bellis rose above McNeil to meet Charlie Taylor’s free-kick to head in his first goal since December.

Goodison Park aired its displeasure when Dyche withdrew his centre-forward for Young, though it allowed McNeil and Iliman Ndiaye to push forward.

Before the Saints secured victory in the shootout, referee Darren Bond dismissed their forceful demand for a penalty in the ninetieth minute.

Everton supporters are hoping that the allegations circulating about Dan Friedkin, the owner of Roma, wanting to buy the team are true. John Textor, a co-owner of Crystal Palace, has also expressed a strong interest.

The winning coach, Russell Martin, expressed his pride in the team. We had a difficult time conceding, but we came back really strong. What the ensemble is capable of excites me.

For Saturday’s crucial Premier League match at Leicester, Everton hopes that James Garner, Dominic Calvert-Lewin, and Vitaliy Mykolenko will recover from an injury in time.
