Former Premier League referee Chris Foy does not think that Bali Mumba’s challenge on Chris Rigg of Sunderland during Saturday’s Championship game at Home Park warranted a penalty kick against Plymouth Argyle.

Patrick Roberts’ penalty for Sunderland in the first half came about as a result of a ruling by current Premier League referee John Brooks that Mumba had fouled Rigg when he was being pursued into the Pilgrims’ box. Mumba and a few of his teammates objected to the decision, but it was in vain.

After Roberts’ penalty kick in the 24th minute gave Sunderland a 1-0 lead at halftime, the home team mounted a fantastic comeback to win 3-2. Argyle goalkeeper Dan Grimshaw was left stunned.

In his Behind the Whistle column for Sky Sports, Foy goes over a number of significant match decisions from all three EFL divisions each week in an effort to provide fans with an understanding of how the game’s laws are interpreted while also providing an insight into the decision-making process.

Pochettino delivers his assessment of Chelsea’s loss against Middlesbrough.

“One of the key points of emphasis communicated ahead of the season was the high threshold for penalising contact, and that contact with clear consequence is where the threshold for penalties is set,” Foy said in reference to the Mumba and Rigg incident.

“In this instance, the referee signals that Bali Mumba of Plymouth Argyle has been given a penalty kick for a push as he approaches the penalty area.
