West Brom star signing will have to wait for chance after thrilling start to season

West Brom star signing will have to wait for chance after thrilling start to season.

star-signing John Swift, who believes that Mikey Johnson may find his form again from the previous campaign, says the winger will have to wait for his opportunity at Albion.

The 25-year-old, who joined the team on loan from Celtic in January, scored seven goals in 20 appearances.

Despite his brilliant performances during his loan term, which propelled Albion into the Championship play-offs, a permanent transfer this summer seemed improbable.

But towards the end of the transfer window, it became known that West Brom had made a £3 million offer for Johnston’s services, and the winger had successfully completed his return to The Hawthorns.

Johnston earned his debut in the 3-0 victory over Portsmouth as a substitute, but he will have tough competition to overcome.

Karlan Grant is back and has had an incredible season so far as a left winger. He has contributed significantly to each of the five games and scored at Stoke.

Though he emphasised he will have to wait for his opportunity to shine once more, midfielder John Swift expressed how encouraged the Albion team is by Johnston’s comeback.

He declared: “When he first arrived, everyone was aware of his importance. Around here, he gets along with everyone and is a great guy.

“KG is doing incredibly well right now, so he needs to wait for his chance.”

When it came closer, it felt like he may actually return, even if it had been unlikely at first for the players.

The Express & Star reported on the penultimate day of the transfer window that Johnston was edging closer to a shock return to The Hawthorns.

Johnston later disclosed in an interview that he returned to the West Midlands and lived with Jayson Molumby, a midfielder, before to finalising his contract with Albion.

Swift continued, “It was a great message to wake up to that he went to Molumby’s at two in the morning.

“I believe he is currently looking for a place and staying in a motel. He is not mine to have!”

In addition to complimenting Grant on his play since returning to The Hawthorns, Swift also gave Josh Maja props for his early-season goal-scoring prowess.

He leads the Championship in scoring with five goals so far this season, but the former Reading star is more pleased with another facet of his game.

“I don’t think anyone has expected Josh to start the season like this,” he continued. “We knew Josh as a player and that he was a good player.”

“Everyone has noticed that KG is working just as hard as everyone else on the pitch with the things he’s been doing, like dropping off in the pockets but also coming in behind and scoring goals.

“The objectives will materialise. Being here is great because Grady, Jed, Mikey, and everyone else fit in.”
