“Careful what you wish for” – Pundit warns Stoke City as Norwich City man eyed up to replace Steven Schumacher

“Careful what you wish”for”—Pundit warns Stoke City as Norwich City man eyed up to replace Steven Schumacher.

According to pundit Carlton Palmer, Stoke City would be taking a risk by hiring Narcis Pelach, the first-team coach of Norwich City, as their new manager.

With just five games played in the season, Steven Schumacher was shockingly fired on Monday morning, prompting Stoke to begin looking for a new manager.

Since December, Schumacher has been in command of the bet365 Stadium. He managed to keep the Potters in the Championship the previous season, culminating in five straight wins, but the board has made the decision to take action following an uneven start to the current campaign.

Saturday’s 1-0 loss to Oxford United at the Kassam Stadium marked Schumacher’s final game in charge of Stoke, and the team now sits 13th in the

Championship table (as it stands 16th September)
Team P GD Pts
9 Leeds United 5 3 8
10 Middlesbrough 5 2 8
11 Swansea City 5 2 7
12 QPR 5 -1 6
13 Stoke City 5 -3 6
14 Coventry City 5 -1 5
15 Norwich City 5 -2 5
16 Plymouth Argyle 5 -4 5

The Potters have been granted permission by Norwich to speak with Pelach about their open management position, and if negotiations are fruitful, he is anticipated to bring goalkeeping coach Paul Clements along, according to journalist John Percy.

After three years as a member of Huddersfield Town’s coaching staff, including two spells as interim manager, Pelach moved to Carrow Road last summer. He has also held positions as assistant at Girona, manager of Figueres and Peralda, and manager of Figueres.

Pelach is reportedly not the only candidate for the Stoke position, though, as Stockport County manager Dave Challinor and Blackburn Rovers manager John Eustace are also being considered.

Carlton Palmer issues Narcis Pelach warning to Stoke City

Carlton Palmer

Palmer, who spoke exclusively to Football League World, stated that he thought the Potters had made a grave error in firing Schumacher and that it would be risky for Stoke to name Pelach as manager given his lack of experience.

“Rumours are coming out that Norwich have given Stoke permission to speak to first team coach Narcis Pelach,” Palmer stated.

It’s an intriguing one, but I fail to understand it.

“You fire someone like Schumacher after five games and replace him with a mostly unknown person, despite the fact that Pelach is a popular guy.

“If he is successful, it is believed that he will bring goalkeeping coach Paul Clements along. He has been given permission to speak.

Naturally, you choose familiar staff members every time.

“In the summer of last year, Pelach moved to Norwich to take up a coaching position. He had previously worked with Carlos Corberan at Huddersfield, where he also held an interim managing position.

There must be something going on with Stoke where they know something, but I don’t know enough about him to say whether this is a smart move or a terrible one.

“Honestly, I believe that if they stuck with Schumacher, they would have had enormous success.

“Always be careful what you wish for.

We’ll have to wait and see; I can’t really remark because it seems like an unusual one or a curveball, but you never know.

“Not that assistants can’t become managers; we’ve seen one, Enzo Maresca, go from being an assistant to a fantastic position at Leicester to one at Chelsea.

Indeed, many assistants have the potential to be the best.

“But we’ll have to wait and see how this plays out. It’s evident that they did their homework because they moved quickly to get rid of Schumacher, so it has clearly been discussed. They then got in touch with Norwich and got their consent.

“It’s way down the line for Pelach, and I suppose if personal terms are agreed, then he’ll be the new manager of Stoke.

“We’ll have to see how that works out.”

Although other assistants have effectively transitioned into managerial roles, Palmer’s assertion that Pelach’s appointment would pose a significant risk for Stoke is hard to argue against.

Although Pelach has a wealth of Championship coaching experience and has undoubtedly learnt a lot from working under managers such as Carlos Corberan, Neil Warnock, and David Wagner, the job at the bet365 Stadium is challenging, and it is unclear if the 36-year-old is up to the task.

It appeared that Schumacher was beginning to turn the Potters’ fortunes around after years of underperformance; hence, even though the current season has started unevenly, his dismissal has come as a tremendous shock.

Palmer points out that under Schumacher, Stoke seemed to be moving in the right direction, but the board is now under pressure to select a suitable successor after making the contentious decision to fire him.
