Bournemouth player calls referee ‘mental’ after forgetting major rule in Chelsea loss

Anthony Taylor Accused of Forgetting Major Rule in Bournemouth 0-1 Chelsea

Bournemouth skipper Adam Smith has lambasted referee Anthony Taylor for his performance in the Cherries’ 1-0 defeat to Chelsea last weekend. Few people expected the Saturday night match to be as ill-disciplined as it was, but the two teams set a Premier League record for the most yellow cards in one game.

The hosts were on the wrong end of six of those cautions, as well as being unlucky not to take anything away from the game owing to Christopher Nkunku’s late goal. Smith, on the other hand, has subsequently lashed out at Taylor’s performance, even saying he couldn’t ‘live with it longer.’

Adam Smith Fumes at Yellow Card

The defender claimed he didn’t understand why he was cautioned

Speaking after the game, the Bournemouth captain expressed his frustration with why he was given a yellow card by the 45-year-old official, going so far as to declare that Premier League refereeing makes the games unenjoyable. Smith, the most experienced player at Vitality Stadium, explained:

“I can’t handle it anymore. Each foul was a yellow. It is mental. He booked me only for approaching him to discuss the penalty and the sending-off judgment. I’m the captain, and I’m entitled to do so, but he stated I’d come from a long distance, which is why he booked me. But I do not comprehend.

“That’s what I said, and he booked me.” I suppose it’s simply little Bournemouth, which I’ve had for the previous nine years. Sometimes I do not appreciate the game. To be honest, there are other factors at play. It is definitely refereeing, which is quite draining.”

The incident in question occurred when Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez was not sent off after conceding a penalty with a reckless challenge on Cherries forward Evanilson. The Spaniard was saved by the double jeopardy rule, which also saved the spot kick.

Maresca Unphased by Amount of Bookings

The Chelsea boss was happy with the ugly side of his team’s performance

According to the Daily Mail, Enzo Maresca was satisfied with his team’s performance during the weekend, despite the quantity of bookings they received. It is thought that the Italian is content for the Blues to receive so many yellow cards, arguing that if that is what it takes to win, then be it.

It was also stated that the former Leicester City manager verbally chastised his players for returning to the dressing room at half-time with clean kits, which resulted in a more aggressive attitude in the second half, with the Londoners receiving five of their eight cautions. His opposite number, Andoni Iraola, declined to remark on the heated exchange, preferring not to risk getting in trouble with the FA.
