Are there going to be any changes for Sunderland’s match against Middlesbrough?

Since Sunderland played well against Plymouth Argyle in the first half and were probably worthy of a draw, I would normally be cautious about making changes after just one loss, but since we have so many options available, I suppose it is inevitable that changes will be made as the season progresses. At the championship level, depth may be a huge advantage, and coaches are increasingly likely to rearrange things to fit a given opponent. For Middlesbrough, this matchup may require the addition of a few more experienced players, and Chris Mepham and Alan Browne most definitely fall into that category.

After a dismal vacation to the South West, this weekend will be spent righting the ship. We have to set a boundary for that performance and outcome, and we most definitely don’t want to let our early lead slip away this weekend when we play the Smoggies. Although we made a few individual mistakes that clearly hurt us against Argyle, the main issue was that we weren’t nearly as good as we had been in the first four games. But since losing teaches you more than winning does, we must turn this setback into a springboard for progress.

Although Neil is the captain, we performed admirably without him before to the international break, so Régis Le Bris will have to make some difficult decisions. We need to at least draw with whatever or anyone we put out there, and ideally we need a win to turn the journey south into a little inconvenience rather than a fissure in our façade that might widen and deepen.
