Our October victory in Bergamo was a very respectable outcome. It was a fantastic team effort to travel to the home of the free-scoring Europa League holders and not only earn a point but also shut them out entirely.
As the Italian team continues to improve, that outcome appears more remarkable every week. They defeated Young Boys by a score of six goals to one last night while traveling to Switzerland. They had won every single one of those games, scoring 24 goals, and that was their sixth game since we held them to a draw!
They presently have an amazing fourth place in the Champions League standings and second place in Serie A. In just 18 games over the two competitions, they scored an incredible 45 goals.
Considering what transpired in Dortmund, the fact that Celtic traveled to Bergamo and emerged uninjured is a credit to our own abilities and something we should be very proud of.
This season, Brendan has completely changed our team because the players have clearly embraced his approach. That performance in Bergamo demonstrates that we can compete at this level, which is what the manager wants us to do.
At the highest level of football, belief is crucial, and that’s what we left Bergamo with, and we haven’t looked back since.
Recall that the penultimate group stage encounter of this season is Celtic vs. Young Boys in the Champions League on Wednesday, January 22, at Celtic Park.
