Carlton Palmer backs Sheffield United over new Rhian Brewster contract

Carlton Palmer believes that Sheffield United’s decision to extend Rhian Brewster’s contract is a no-brainer, despite the striker’s troubles in front of goal.

This week, Chris Wilder said that the Blades were aiming to lock Brewster down to a new term, since the attacker is out of contract this summer.

Brewster has not signed a new contract since joining Sheffield United for a speculated cost of up to £23.5 million in October 2020.

Rhian Brewster’s new deal “makes absolute sense” for Sheffield United.

Brewster has received a lot of criticism over the years for his apparent lack of worth, with the former Liverpool player netting only seven goals in 105 games for the Blades, but there have been some encouraging indications this season.

Palmer emphasizes the need of protecting the value of Sheffield United’s investment when negotiating a new contract for Brewster.

He told Football League World: “Sheffield United and Chris Wilder have acknowledged that they are in negotiations with Rhian Brewster about extending his contract.

“It doesn’t surprise me; it makes perfect sense for them.”

“He joined the Blades from Liverpool in 2020, signing a five-year contract for a club record sum of about £23.5 million.

“That deal is slated to expire in the summer, and Chris has mentioned that it wasn’t for that much money.

“The 24-year-old had struggled at Bramall Lane in recent years, but with Chris Wilder’s return, he has made significant contributions this season.

“So I believe it makes sense for the club to defend its asset. He’s still a young player. Chris Wilder believes there is more to come from the player.

“He has suffered from injuries, which is an issue. He has not been able to get up and jogging.”

Palmer went on to concede that such a high price would put pressure on any player, before mentioning Brewster’s injury issues.

However, Palmer, a former Sheffield Wednesday player, feels that working with Wilder in the long run can only help him.

Palmer went on to say, “There’s also the issue that when you relocate with a price tag, you have to hit the ground running and appear to perform incredibly well.

“He did not do that; he sustained injuries. And now that Chris Wilder has signed a new long-term contract, I believe he can contribute to any league’s roster provided he stays fit and healthy.

“Chris Wilder and Sheffield United are protecting their assets.”

“You are not going to pay £23 million for a player and then let him leave for free. So, we’ll have to wait and watch how these contract discussions progress.

“Chris Wilder is a brilliant guy, and who wouldn’t want to work for him?” I believe there will be possibilities – Chris Wilder wants and will need options on the front lines.

“But (Rhian Brewster) can play in a variety of positions on that front line.

“I believe it is a positive step for Brewster because he will be able to relax a little more without having to move on to a new club with the baggage of not working out at Sheffield United.

“Hopefully he can carry on making an impact, doing better and better, and substantiating why Sheffield United bought him in the first place.”
