Amazing archive photso show Devizes Road in 1980s and 1990s

A thriving hub of shops and businesses has been a popular part of Swindon for decades.

Devizes Road forms part of a square of busy streets around Old Town, connecting Wood Street and Newport Street, with blocks of flats and a brewery-turned-nightclub based nearby.

These images from the Adver archives show several traders that have come and gone since the 1980s and 1990s, including pub The Heart in Hand. and neighbouring businesses Notions and Paradox.

The former Belmont Brewery was empty for several years, and was the scene of a fire in 1996, before it became a nightclub that went through a few changes of name and ownership – Mission, Studio, Tree, etc – and shared space with branches of Subway and Anytime Fitness inside the vast brick Grade 2-listed building.

Today, it remains a bustling spot with independent pubs and breweries, well-reviewed restaurants, and a handful of shops and hair salons.
