Jamie Vardy may be forced to change his ways by Premier League crackdown
Given that the Premier League is mulling tougher penalties for players who incite the crowd or opposing players, Jamie Vardy might have to moderate his goal celebrations.
Vardy is known for his jesting celebrations and for being a superb finisher. He made fun of the home supporters for not winning a Premier League title just eleven days ago after scoring at Tottenham.
That is only one instance of Vardy’s antics over the last ten years, as the Leicester City striker has taken great pleasure in frustrating opposing supporters and occasionally players as well. However, he might now need to exercise more caution.
Following his goal against Manchester City, Arsenal teenager Myles Lewis-Skelly imitated Erling Haaland, which sparked a debate. According to Premier League chief football officer Tony Scholes, celebrations that go beyond amusement and become ridicule or criticism must be handled. Punishments during or after the game could result from that.
When Everton forward Iliman Ndiaye scored against Brighton earlier this season, he was given a booking for imitating a bird. Vardy got away with acting like an eagle after scoring at Crystal Palace a few years ago.
For Vardy, that’s only the beginning. He has shushed several Wolves supporters, cupped his ears to many others, howled in front of Wolves supporters, and boing-boinged about the Hawthorns.
“A balance exists,” Scholes said to Sky Sports.”I believe that everyone enjoys watching festivities. There is a line, even though some of the celebrations have been hilarious and amusing. We would have to address it once it devolves into ridicule or criticism.
