Newcastle United's Joe Willock celebrates scoring his side's third goal at Birmingham

The former Arsenal man speaks on Man City, Wembley and his future

Newcastle United star Joe Willock admits that he can only work on being the “best version” of himself between now and the end of the season.

Willock started pre-season in fine form and even spoke about targeting an England call-up but the campaign has been a challenge for him and he has started just six matches in the Premier League. A couple of injury niggles have also held him back but the main reason he has not been able to push on in the top-flight has undoubtedly been the form of Joelinton, Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali.

With Joelinton injured and Anthony Gordon set to be passed fit for the Etihad Stadium it remains to be seen what role Willock is assigned against City. The former Arsenal star was man of the match with two goals against Birmingham City last weekend.

When asked about his lofty heights at the start of the season, Willock told Chronicle Live: “For me, I need to continue working on the best version of myself. I want to play week in, week out for Newcastle United and push on from there.”

After the euphoria of beating his old club and then Birmingham, it is very much back to business for the Magpies in the Premier League now. Willock says Newcastle must ‘park’ any thoughts about cup glory with a Champions League spot very much at stake.

He added: “It is amazing, when we started those competitions it was a goal. We want to win every game and compete in every competition.

“We’re delighted we are going to Wembley but we are trying to park that. We have some big games in the Premier League now, especially this weekend.”

Willock will hope he is rewarded with the start his performance at St Andrew’s merits when Newcastle arrive at the Etihad this weekend. The game sees United, sitting in sixth, travel to fourth-placed Man City in an encounter that could prove crucial at the end of the campaign.
