Weekday Cross viaducts demolished

Weekday Cross viaducts demolished

In Nottingham, England, a concrete viaduct and a new tram bridge were built in place of the Great Central Railway’s (GCR) viaduct close to Weekday Cross Junction.

Explanation

The London Extension of the GCR, which connected Annesley with London Marylebone via Nottingham, Leicester, and Rugby, included the GCR viaduct.

Victoria Station was shared by the Great Northern Railway (GNR) and the GCR.

The two lines diverged onto high-level arched viaducts over Arkwright Street and Broad Marsh at Weekday Cross Junction.

Originally, there was a signal box situated in the space between the two viaducts.

The town hall and primary market were previously situated in the vicinity of Weekday Cross, which served as Nottingham’s municipal hub throughout the Middle Ages.

Today, the area is home to the Nottingham Contemporary, the Broadmarsh, and Nottingham College.
