A former Sunderland player has declared his desire to manage the Black Cats in the future, claiming to be aware of the “culture” of the team.

After a terribly unsuccessful brief tenure in leadership, the Black Cats fired Michael Beale last month. Beale had initially taken over for Tony Mowbray.
Since then, Mike Dodds has rejoined the first team as an interim manager, but the team’s performance in the Championship has remained subpar. With six straight losses, Sunderland is mired in 12th place and their chances of making the playoffs are all but gone.
To restore some stability to the team, efforts are being made to locate a long-term Beale replacement. Dodds will take over at the Stadium of Light until the end of the current campaign.
Will Still, the manager of Reims, has been a strong candidate to take over for a while now. The 31-year-old is a highly regarded young coach with a bright future in football. According to a “well established” agency, he is expected to make a move to the Championship.
Alex Neil, the former manager of Sunderland, is reportedly amenable to the notion of rejoining the team. Neil left for Stoke City after leading the Black Cats to promotion in 2022.

Dwight Yorke has submitted an application to be Sunderland’s next manager, according to statements obtained by The Daily Mail.
If I’m being really honest, I recently turned in my resume to the club because I want the position. I’ve spent over three years living in the area, so I know enough about Sunderland to know what the locals want and expect from that squad.
“When you’re not involved, it can be quite challenging to evaluate what’s happening behind the scenes. All you can do is speculate, and that can be a risky way of thinking at times. The most crucial step would be to enter and establish stability. The football component is my main worry since, above all, I’m an avid lover of the game.”
With the exception of a six-month stint with A-League side Macarthur FC in 2022—during which he did win the Australian Cup final—there is very little on the Trinidadian’s resume that suggests he deserves a Championship position, so this has come as a bit of a surprise given his lack of managerial experience.
Since Yorke is a former player and is familiar with the team, hiring him would feel like a huge gamble, and perhaps he should be applying for a backroom role instead. For this reason, it is extremely difficult to see Sunderland’s owners taking a chance on Yorke at a time when a proven manager needs to arrive and ensure that the playoffs are the aim next season, assuming the Black Cats miss out this term.
