Middlesbrough have submitted their squad list to the EFL after the January transfer window
Middlesbrough’s EFL squad registration list has been announced following the end of the January transfer window, with the club down to 24 over-21 players from a possible 25 after a busy month.
Boro began the month with the full quota of 25 registered players and completed six incoming deals during the transfer window, one of which was just converting George Edmundson’s loan into a permanent move. To make room for the new signings, seven first-team players left the club, either permanently or on loan.
In terms of the officially confirmed squad list for the rest of the season, the headline is that Seny Dieng’s campaign has concluded, as expected. The goalkeeper had Achilles surgery last month, and with Sol Brynn also out with a dislocated shoulder, Boro were obliged to sign Bournemouth’s Mark Travers on loan. Dieng was never anticipated to return this season and has been removed from the list, along with Tommy Smith, who announced his retirement last week.
Brynn, who is slated to return in March, remains registered. Two more long-term absentees with questionable returns have also made the list, raising optimism that they will play again this season.
Darragh Lenihan has been out of action for 15 months following ankle surgery and subsequent Achilles issues. Carrick acknowledged earlier this week that, while there was no clear timetable considering the duration of his absence, he was optimistic the centre-back will return this season.
Bangura, meanwhile, has been re-added to Boro’s EFL squad after missing the first half of the season. The Sierra Leone left-back suffered an Achilles injury in preseason and was always expected to miss the rest of the season, hence he was left off the original roster. While it remains to be seen whether he will return to play this season, his registration ensures that if he does, he will be eligible.
