Sunderland have lost their past six Championship games.
Last weekend’s 4-2 loss to Southampton became the Black Cats’ sixth consecutive defeat, the first since 2006.
Mike Dodds’ team is now in 12th position in the standings, with only nine points separating them from the drop zone. They have a challenging encounter against QPR this weekend.
The R’s have climbed out of the bottom three after losing only one of their previous five, and a win this weekend could propel them as high as 17th and reduce the distance between themselves and the Black Cats to just five points.

On the Championship Check-In podcast, EFL expert Sam Parkin shared his thoughts on Sunderland’s current situation. He said that if the team loses to QPR, the owners may make a dramatic choice about management.
Parkin stated:
“What if they lose another one? They could. I’m not sure. They could do something, couldn’t they? The folks in charge are probably going to be at the club for a long time, but they could bring someone in to help, right? “They might consider it.”
“I usually say that six or seven [defeats] gets a manager fired, and I know we’re not in that type of environment here with what we’re talking about. But, you get my drift, it’s quite desperate.”

A defeat this weekend would raise serious concerns for Kyril Louis-Dreyfus and Kristjaan Speakman.
And if several of the clubs at the bottom win again this weekend, Sunderland might be in big danger.
Sheffield Wednesday in 23rd and Plymouth Argyle in 17th are separated by just three points, with Sunderland six points clear of Plymouth; with 27 points yet to play for, the Black Cats are far from out of the woods.
If Sunderland’s league situation worsens, Louis-Dreyfus and Speakman may be forced to bring in someone.
Things certainly aren’t going well under Dodds right now, and it may require a Sam Allardyce-type figure, or perhaps Neil Warnock, who has much of Championship and survival experience, to oversee the next few games and secure Sunderland’s Championship position, as Parkin suggests.
Relegation would be the worst-case scenario for Sunderland. It would put them back significantly and destroy all of their hard work over the last few years.
Dodds is still a quality coach, and a strong win against QPR this Saturday would relieve a lot of pressure on him and the club.
