Bayern wax lyrical over Celtic experience as souped-up defender stands out and fans risk Uefa wrath
We select a few ‘extras’ from Celtic vs. Bayern Munich’s Champions League play-off first leg on Wednesday.
Even though Bayern Munich won 2-1 at an inebriated Celtic Park, they will undoubtedly have regretted their decision, making this a bizarre football match.
Bayern had one foot and more in the round of sixteen when Harry Kane scored the Germans’ second goal after 49 minutes. They were up 2-0 and had hardly changed gears. Celtic would have had little chance of catching up in Germany next Tuesday if they had scored a third goal or even kept the lead.
Celtic should be commended for their ability to rally into the match. Against such distinguished company, there was no raising of the white flag or acceptance of a 2-0 loss that would not be remembered as a poor performance. They set out to find objectives. Daizen Maeda scored one, and there were opportunities to score a valuable equalizer. At full time, their comeback caused enough agitation at Celtic Park to warrant a thorough send-off.
The odds are stacked against Celtic, of course. With so many goal scorers, this Bayern Munich squad is a formidable force at home against any opponent. They are ahead 2-1 in the tie in spite of all mentioned above.
Celtic can at least go to the Allianz Arena with some hope, even though they will need to put on one of their best performances ever to advance to the round of sixteen. It is a benefit to get past this point in the Champions League. Brendan Rodgers, the manager, and his team can fight to the end.
The turning point for Celtic appeared to be when Daizen Maeda was moved centrally from out wide, with Adam Idah replaced by Jota. The team looked sprightlier and more energetic and Rodgers pointed that out in his post-match comments. “He’s such an important player for us,” Rodgers said of Maeda. “You see that once we got the pressure on how we would want the top end to do the field , then that changes the dynamic of a game because that’s how we normally play. So yes, he’s got a feeling for goals. All the different types of goals like you see. That one there, just a cute little striker’s header in the six-yard box.”
