Burnley FC player’s Swansea City admission is an elephant in the room amid contract stand-off

Burnley faces significant uncertainty in the coming months, since they still don’t know the league they’ll be playing in, and off-field contract issues remain unresolved.

Six first-team players are poised to leave at the conclusion of the season if nothing is done to keep them, including this season’s best scorer, Josh Brownhill.

There’s still a few months until the end of the season to figure out new terms for those scheduled to depart, but the division Burnley plays in could have a significant impact on who stays and who goes, so it could be a very late affair.

Some of the players scheduled to leave would be excellent Premier League possibilities, while others would probably only be retained if it meant another season of Championship playing, but until that is determined, the contract problem threatens to rumble on.

Connor Roberts is one of those soon-to-be-out-of-contract talents, and the club needs to address his issue as soon as possible, considering that he has been one of the first names on the team sheet throughout the season.

Connor Roberts’ Swansea City admission will worry Burnley

Roberts, who came through the Swansea system as a teenager, became a fan favourite after establishing himself in the club. The Clarets signed him from South Wales in summer 2021.

Roberts has a strong connection to the Swans, so it’s not surprising that he expressed interest in returning to play for them before retiring.

He expressed his desire to return to Swansea and join their team in the future. When I return and play for them again, I hope to have happy recollections.

As a 29-year-old, he may consider returning to the Premier League with Burnley, as his time at the highest level is limited.

As he approaches the end of his career, this could be his last chance to re-sign for his boyhood club, so his admission will undoubtedly concern the Clarets, who are aware that they are likely to lose their first choice right back as things stand.

Burnley already have a potential Connor Roberts replacement

Oliver Sonne

Burnley perhaps prevented Roberts’ exit in the summer by swooping in January to sign Oliver Sonne from Silkeborg, who, it’s expected in time, will be a long-term Roberts replacement.

At the present, though, he’s an extraordinarily raw talent, as he proved in January when he came on against Sunderland and gave a penalty away with a wild challenge in the area, so he still has a lot to learn.

Burnley now have a ready and capable player in Roberts, which is crucial for their promotion chances this season.

Going into a Premier League season with Sonne at right back is a little frightening, and he may still be one in the future, but for the time being, they should be doing everything they can to replace Roberts.

The Clarets’ defensive unit has been the core of their success this season, and breaking it up may be devastating to any hopes they have for next season, regardless of division.
