UEFA explanation for huge Celtic vs Bayern penalty decision revealed

TNT Sports pundit Rory Hamilton has disclosed the UEFA explanation for the massive penalty decision in the encounter between Celtic and Bayern Munich.

A lengthy VAR check took place in the second half of the Champions League knockout play-off round tie after a challenge on Arne Engels in the box.

The midfielder had gone down after being tackled by Bayern Munich centre-back Dayot Upamecano.

The play had proceeded before referee Jesus Gil Manzano paused proceedings as VAR checked the incident.

The official was then called to the monitor by Carlos del Cerro Grande after it was confirmed Engels was onside before the tackle.

However, Manzano did not amend his on-field ruling with no penalty awarded.

Replays proved Upamecano had managed to touch the ball before standing on Engels’ foot in the box.

Hamilton – leading commentary for TNT Sports – then gave the official UEFA reasoning for the call.

A notification on the screen seen by the presenter had claimed the defender played the ball in a “fair manner”.

Hamilton stated: “The explanation for no penalty was that the Byaern No2 played the ball in a fair manner and therefore no penalty.”
