Spurs were informed by Crystal Palace that they had “no chance” of acquiring Marc Guehi on the day of the transfer deadline.
Last summer, Crystal Palace turned down proposals from Newcastle United for Guehi, and earlier this month, the Eagles turned down another sizable offer from Spurs. Crystal Palace remained steadfast in the closing moments of the window, despite Guehi’s contract having only one and a half years remaining, as manager Oliver Glasner clarified.
“It was clear in our situation that we can’t sell a player on deadline day because we can’t find a replacement within a few hours,” he stated to reporters. It simply isn’t feasible.
“It was evident we could not sell Marc because we could not get the replacement. We lost Trevoh Chalobah. We lost Chadi [Riad] due to injury.
It was just not possible to sell Marc.” Newcastle made a number of high-profile offers for Guehi last summer, but the Magpies finally stopped bidding a few weeks before the window closed after Crystal Palace’s demands exceeded the club’s limits. “Credit to the chairman [Steve Parish] that they were not really in negotiations.
He explained to them pretty quickly that there was no chance because of our situation and Crystal Palace always has to be number one in all the considerations.”
It is important to remember that if the England international had shown up, Newcastle could have had to approve several exits before the current fiscal year ended in June.
In order to avoid a PSR violation last year, Newcastle had to raise money at the last minute, and club executives have emphasized time and time again that they do not want to be in that predicament again.
