It was approaching. Everyone was aware of it. However, defensive lineman Arik Armstead was formally released by the San Francisco 49ers, the reigning NFC Champions, at the beginning of the 2017 league season.
With the release’s post-June 1 designation, San Francisco has avoided paying $18 million in salary cap penalties for the 2024 NFL season. This resulted from the two parties’ inability to agree on a restructured contract.
Armstead was the 49ers player with the longest contract until he was released. He was a first-round selection in 2015 out of Oregon and spent nine seasons on the squad.
Armstead’s finest game occurred in 2019 when he led the 49ers with 18 quarterback hits and 10 sacks. He recorded 13 quarterback hits and five sacks in 12 games (all starts) during the previous campaign.
The 49ers have added two defensive tackles to their roster, replacing Armstead. This includes signing Jordan Elliott, who was cut by the Cleveland Browns, and acquiring Maliek Collins via a trade with the Houston Texans.
The Texans, as previously mentioned, are already expressing interest in Armstead. It makes sense, considering that San Francisco’s defensive coordinator in 2021 and 2022 was none other than DeMeco Ryans, the head coach of Houston.
