‘Unbelievable’: Alan Shearer says former Everton midfielder was best he’s seen at one thing

Over the years, Everton has produced a number of players that are quite dominant in the air.

One name that would quickly spring to mind is Duncan Ferguson. For the Toffees, the former striker scored 36 goals with his head. More than half of the goals he scored for the team came from his intellect.

Harry Kane beat Ferguson’s 25-year record for the most headed goals during the previous season.

Moreover, Dominic Calvert-Lewin merits recognition. Some of the 26-year-old’s greater qualities are his athleticism and airborne abilities. Nineteen of his fifty goals have originated from his intellect.

When talking about aerial ability, Alan Shearer mentioned another former Everton player in the most recent episode of the Rest is Football Podcast.

Shearer asserted that Gary Speed had the greatest leap he had ever seen in his career when speaking with Gary Lineker and Micah Richards.

“I’ve seen better leaps than Speedo’s.” He stood slightly under six feet. He remarked, “His leap and timing were unbelievable.”

Throughout his 59 games in the royal blue stripe, Speed scored an amazing 16 goals.

Richards also listed one of the greatest ball headers he has ever seen, a former Everton player.

“Wayne Rooney,” it would say. He was able to jump. Wazza and I will agree on that.

The reference to Speed’s leap has been made previously. Dean Ashton, a former teammate, claimed in a 2021 interview with talkSPORT that the Welsh international could jump like “Ronaldo.”

He said, “I’ve never seen anyone leap so high and be so aggressive when they headed the ball, watching him play as a child.”

“Watching it was enjoyable. We discuss Ronaldo’s leap. One of those belonged to Speed. He simply stood there, staring at it.

With that wide smile on his face, he set an example for others. It’s really unfortunate that this occurred. But it’s only fitting that we keep in mind all of Gary Speed’s wonderful qualities.
