Sheffield Wednesday in sights of controversial owner who took EFL club to brink of COLLAPSE
TALAL AL HAMMAD aims to make a comeback as a football owner – with Sheffield Wednesday firmly in his sights.
Wednesday fans recently protested against Dejphon Chansiri’s ownership
Four years ago, when the Latics were in administration, Al Hammad purchased them.
However, he brought the team to the verge of disintegration following a chaotic tenure in charge.
The Arab, though, is now eager to work with disgruntled Owls supporters who are attempting to remove contentious owner Dejphon Chansiri.
As the Owls aim for the Championship play-offs, Chansiri let fans down with a quiet January transfer window, which only served to stoke animosity.
However, he wants a lot of money for the team, therefore Al Hammad might not be able to afford it.
Danny Rohl, a young German coach, has led Wednesday to the verge of a postseason berth.
Chansiri acknowledged that he hadn’t spoken to Rohl since December in a catastrophic fan forum last month.
Wednesday, who have won the FA Cup three times and the league four times, haven’t competed in the top division for 25 years.
In 2000, the team was demoted from the Premier League.
After Rohl saved them from relegation last season, they have subsequently moved back and forth between League One and the Championship.
In 2017, Wednesday’s most recent Championship playoff campaign ended in a loss to Huddersfield Town in the semi-finals.
The 1867 Group protested Chansiri’s ownership at the recent Yorkshire derby versus Leeds.
Before kickoff at Elland Road, club icon Chris Waddle pleaded with the Thai entrepreneur to sell up.
“Rohl has a lot of faith in his team,” Waddle told ITV Sport.
“They put in a lot of effort and, in my opinion, have exceeded expectations this season.
“This club is fantastic. Excellent history, large fan base, and I would love for someone to purchase them.”
