West Brom may have to cash in on sought-after star to fuel Tony Mowbray rebuild: Opinion
West Brom are looking towards a brighter future with new owners settled in and their first managerial appointment made.
West Brom are coming up on a year since they came under new ownership. Shilen Patel’s Bilkul Football took over from former WBA incumbent Guochuan Lai, whose tenure was one of dismay.
Resisting late bids
West Brom saw Everton revive their interest in wing star Fellows late on in the winter transfer window but despite claims of a late move being on the cards, it quickly emerged that no such thing was taking place. Instead, the Toffees are set to come in for the WBA academy graduate in the summer once again.
The interest will bring food for thought at The Hawthorns, and there’s a couple of outcomes to weigh up.
Keeping Fellows could give the Baggies a homegrown star to have at the forefront of their bid to return to previous heights. Fending off interest could also give him time to develop further and increase his value, leading to a bigger sale down the li
It was hoped that popular boss Carlos Corberan would lead this new chapter at The Hawthorns and while he performed brilliantly as Patel and co laid the foundations of their ownership, the Spaniard has now moved onto bigger things in his native with Valencia.

Returning fan favourite Tony Mowbray is now at the helm, and some solid recruits were brought in during the winter transfer window.
However, the boss will want to really dig his claws into the West Brom squad this summer to make it his own. In order to do that to their best ability, the Championship side must consider cashing in on sought-after prized asset Tom Fellows.

However, what must be carefully considered is the benefits of cashing in. As an academy-reared star, any fee received for 21-year-old Fellows represents ‘pure profit’ in the eyes of PSR regulations, as he has cost nothing to sign.
That would put the Baggies in a fantastic spot financially, especially after selling Alex Palmer in the winter too. Not only would it give WBA the funds to go and sign a host of players to suit Mowbray’s setup, but it would give them big leeway in the regulatory side, or at least go a long way to putting them in a better position than they were under Lai.
A tough call
It’s far easier said than done letting go of such an influential player, of course. Fellows is a standout Championship winger and a huge prospect.
He’s been the main source of creativity for West Brom with 11 assists in 31 Championship games this season, also chipping in with two goals. The youngster has retained his key role since the managerial switch too.
Letting go of such an asset would be a blow, but from a business point of view, if a big offer comes in for Fellows, it could be an opportunity that is too good to resist.
