Edinburgh man who changed name because it was ‘too Christian’ dies in prison

Random Switch wanted to remove himself from a baptism register before brawling with a church official as he was sent to a psychiatric hospital for treatment following his conviction.

An Edinburgh man who changed his name via deed poll because it sounded ‘too Christian’ died in prison.

Random Switch, 64, was formerly known as Clive Henshaw before changing his name. at 1997, the 36-year-old appeared at Edinburgh Sheriff Court and admitted breaching the peace.
Switch wanted to delete himself off a baptism register before brawling with a church official after being admitted to a psychiatric hospital for treatment following his conviction.
Switch went to the Archdiocese of St Andrews and Edinburgh’s offices to have his old name deleted before becoming quite violent with a staff member.

Switch, who lived on Broughton Road at the time, was taken to the Royal Edinburgh Hospital and held in jail.
Switch died behind bars at the city’s Saughton jail on November 12, 2024, and police were contacted, with a fatal accident investigation scheduled for later.

A note on the Scottish Prison Service website states: “Random Switch, 64, of HMP Edinburgh, died on November 12, 2024.” Each death in custody is reported to Police Scotland, who then notify the Procurator Fiscal. Fatal Accident Inquiries are conducted in due process.”
