HISTORY OF SHEFFIELD UNITED
The Blades were never an afterthought; the notion of Bramall Lane having its own football team to play inside its
already renowned confines meant that the new squad would be assembled to compete for the top accolades in the
sport at the time.
Sheffield United Football Club was founded on the evening of March 22, 1889, at the Bramall Lane Ground
Committee’s and Joseph Wostinholm’s offices at 10 Norfolk Row.
Charles Clegg, a football pioneer and the chairman of the local FA, and David Haigh were among those present for a
meeting that started at 7.30 p.m. on the second floor. It was decided to create a new club that would be managed by
Joseph, the Haigh Ground Committee at the time.
Clegg declined a role due to his other responsibilities with the FA, but offered his advice and guidance. His resilience
would not last as he would go on to become the club’s chairman and one of the greatest figures in the early
professional game.
The Blades became the first senior ‘United’ team in the game when they adopted the name from the Sheffield United
Cricket Club.
The Blades defeated Burslem Port Vale in 1892 and are still the only league team to score ten goals in a league game.
The team was the first to ever be promoted through a play-off match in 1893 (against Accrington).
Sheffield United won the League Championship within ten years of its founding; in 1897–1898 the Blades defeated
Sunderland to capture the coveted trophy. That year, they also became the inaugural winners of the Charity Shield,
which was the precursor to the Community Shield.
