SAINTS manager Ivan Juric thought Ryan Manning has enough “quality” to compensate for his costly missed chances against Burnley on Saturday.
The Irish full-back was twice denied by Clarets goalkeeper Václav Hladký during Southampton’s 1-0 FA Cup loss to the Championship club. Manning’s first chance came after the Czech keeper passed directly to him, but he delayed long enough for Hladký to block his attempt.
The 28-year-old was then denied in the second half when Tyler Dibling deflected a challenge and placed the ball on his right foot inside the box.
Manning returned to the side as a left wing-back, forcing Brazilian defender Welington to play left centre-back. “We have an issue with our left centre back. Today, Welington played (there). Juric stated, “I have to say that he performed admirably the other day.” “Manning usually scores goals in this situation because he has excellent quality.
I believe we accomplished many fantastic things, both on the left and right sides (to create opportunities).
“He (Manning) had some really nice moments and generated a lot of opportunities, but I’m disappointed with the outcome.
“It was tough since everyone (from Burnley) had returned. We could have played more with long balls, but we planned the game around the ball. “After the goal, we didn’t create enough, which is correct.
We always lose games because we lack the quality to score.” When asked if he would have started Onuachu in hindsight, Juric replied, “No.
“In this game, we do much better without Onuachu. We are dynamic, which I appreciate, but it wasn’t enough.
Onuachu was demoted to the bench following his match-winning goal against Ipswich last weekend, with Diblng and Kamaldeen Sulemana starting up front.
Brazilian full-back Welington impressed Saints supporters on his St Mary’s debut by clearing off the line and winning the most tackles.
The 23-year-old won four of his five tackles while also moving forward to assist in the assault, resulting in Dibling hitting the side netting.
