Exclusive: Hackett stunned by Willie Collum after Nick Walsh’s Rangers ‘slap’ audio

In the final moments of the Rangers’ 3-1 victory at Tannadice Park late last month, Diomande was shown a straight red card after appearing to slap Dundee United defender Kevin Holt. Diomande swiftly had that sending off overturned on appeal, but Hackett thinks that Scottish officials will need to reconsider that decision after the latest update. The former PGMOL chief and former FIFA official exclusively told Football Insider that Scottish FA referees chief Willie Collum may need to hold discussions with lawmakers IFAB regarding their interpretation of the incident.

It came to light that during those discussions, Don Robertson and the other two VAR officials had determined that Diomande’s contact with Holt was “negligible” and ought to have resulted in a yellow card.

Referee Nick Walsh, however, decided to stick with his first judgment to dismiss the Rangers midfielder after watching the incident on the pitchside monitor during the game.

However, Collum acknowledged after the broadcast that the red card was revoked because the review panel concurred with the VAR officials that the contact was “negligible.”

Hackett responded to it by telling Football Insider: “According to the law, striking or attempting to strike is a red card offense. It is expected of players to use their feet during playing.

A risky precedent is being created by the decision that a slap is not a striking offense.

The offending player’s use of force was judged by the referee who was near to the action. Once the referee has been requested to go to the monitor, the VAR’s duty should be done. They can only offer advice, not instructions.

When the law is considered, it is remarkable that the player’s appeal was one. In Scotland, you will only get a yellow if you slap an opponent in the face.

“I propose that the Scottish FA speak with the IFAB about this incident in order to find out if Willie Collum’s and the appeals panel’s interpretations are correct.”

That was not the only controversial event that occurred during that match; Rangers also had a penalty appeal for handball against Declan Gallagher denied.

The Light Blues midfielder has recently come under scrutiny for evading the authorities’ full punishment on multiple occasions.

In their draw in early January, many thought Rangers forward Diomande was fortunate not to be sent off for a studs-up challenge on Nicky Cadden against Hibs.

Nevertheless, in the two games that Philippe Clement’s team has played since his red card against Dundee United was overturned, he has continued to start.
