Following Southampton’s 1-0 defeat to Burnley in the FA Cup fourth round, manager Ivan Jurić addressed the media to share his thoughts on the match. The sole goal came from Marcus Edwards, who scored 18 minutes into his debut for Burnley.
Jurić expressed his disappointment, stating, “It was an extremely bad game. We did a few things good but the rest of the things very bad. They were much better than us, superior in everything. It was a really bad game and a really tough day.”
He acknowledged a brief positive spell before halftime but emphasized the team’s overall poor performance: “Today everything was negative. There were no good things – we have to find a way so that next time it will not happen, what happened today.”
Reflecting on recent matches, Jurić noted, “In the three games before we conceded three goals from three set-pieces, practically. Today we conceded five goals.”
He also took responsibility for the team’s shortcomings, stating, “It’s important to work with the team. It’s been lots of games and only a few trainings, but I have to say that I expected a little bit more of the team and a little bit more of myself.”
Looking ahead, Jurić emphasized the need for improvement: “We have to play like we did tonight, nothing less, and grow up in the mentality.”
He also praised the unwavering support of the fans: “They are incredible. We are last with six points and I never saw things like this: St Mary’s always full; today they arrive, lots of them, and we heard them. I’m sorry for them, but I think they have to be a little bit proud of the game we had tonight.”
Southampton will aim to bounce back as they prepare to face Nottingham Forest in their next fixture.
