This program recreates the most exciting games of the era. It contains a comprehensive examination of United’s

major players in the 1970s. It investigates the reasons underlying United’s early success and subsequent collapse.

After a tight and exciting promotion campaign, United returned to the top division in May 1971, playing their brand

of lively, attacking football. Taking the first division by storm, United raced past former title winners Leeds, Everton,

and Arsenal to top the standings in October.

It was the renowned era of Woodward and Currie, when United were a dominant force in the game. It was also a

transitional year, with John Harris leaving the manager’s office at the end of 1973 and Yorkshire playing their final

game at Bramall Lane. After narrowly missing out on the League title and European qualification at the end of the

1974-75 season, the new South Stand and a four-sided, dedicated football stadium opened in August 1975.

Unfortunately, the debilitating costs of growth caused the Blades to start a quick slide, which resulted in United

being relegated to the third division by the end of the decade, despite many management changes.

Revisiting the most exciting games of the period, the author also analyses the key players of the era and the reasons

for United’s initial success and ultimate decline.
