Lawrence Shankland lands Rangers contract pitch amid ‘sneaky’ Hearts feeling as Lyall Cameron ‘microscope’ intensifies.
The summer recruitment campaign at Ibrox is well started, and it could go a step further.
Rangers should move for Hearts captain Lawrence Shankland, who is nearing the end of his contract. Derek Ferguson believes the Scotland international has a “sneaky” chance of joining Ibrox this summer. After winning both the Golden Boot and the PFA Player of the Year title last season, the 29-year-old has only scored four goals this season during a difficult campaign for the Jambos. However, since returning from injury last month, Shankland has begun to show flashes of his Tynecastle best once more.
Shankland has been linked with a move to Rangers in recent seasons, and he is now free to sign a pre-contract agreement away from Hearts as his contract nears the end. And Ferguson told Open Goal: “I’ve got a sneaky tiny sense (that Rangers’ interest in Shankland is still alive). I enjoy Shankland. Dessers is who he is; you never know what to expect. “I’d take Shankland in a minute. “You’re going to get the Hearts captain at Rangers for hee-haw.” When asked if the Rangers should sign the frontman, he replied, “absolutely.”
Lyall Cameron has already signed a pre-contract, and Steven Naismith believes the Dundee midfielder will face increased pressure as his contract expires. The 22-year-old must wait to become a Rangers player, and Naismith told The Warm-Up, “See for him, he’ll be sitting thinking Rangers are watching every performance wondering “Are you good enough to play?” but, in reality, he’s a huge prospect. “I think he’ll be successful.”

Kevin Thomson believes Cameron will have to demonstrate his “personality” to play for the Glasgow giants: “I like him; he’s always been a standout when he’s played for Dundee.” When considering Connor Barron, he appears to fit the profile that rangers have been seeking to sign.
“I’m pretty sure he’ll do really well. I think he’ll be under the microscope far more than he’s ever believed, but if he’s got that personality he’ll be able to handle it”.
Rabbi Matondo is heading in the opposite direction. He is currently on loan at Hannover 96, with the Bundesliga side holding the option to make the move permanent at the end of the season. However, he may have ended up at Coventry City if the transaction hadn’t fallen through last season. Now thinking on why the Welsh winger did not make the move to the English Championship, manager Frank Lampard said: “It certainly wasn’t a case of no more money, as you suggested. That is not my area of expertise, but since I’ve been here, I’ve been working with Doug [King, owner] and Dean [Austin, head of recruitment], and we are very much on the same page about what we want to do.”
