Rangers’ unique kickoff time against Benfica is one of the many reasons why UEFA is supreme.

The shimmering European lights that illuminate Ibrox at the start of Rangers’ European matches are a familiar sight to the team’s supporters.

They might not need them this time. This Thursday at 5:45 p.m., the second leg of Rangers’ Europa League round of 16 match will begin. Traditionally, European games at Ibrox begin at 8 p.m., but this time, the “A” team of Britain will take precedence. That’s TNT Sports’ take on it, anyway. This Thursday, five British teams are playing at home in Europe, including Rangers.

West Ham, Brighton, Liverpool, and Aston Villa join them in the UECL and UEL, respectively. West Ham and Rangers will kick play at teatime, while Villa, Brighton, and Liverpool will occupy the 8 p.m. slots. Benfica, the Rangers’ rivals, have also been avoided. Lisbon is a team made up of two cities, much like Glasgow. Sporting will play Atalanta in Bergamo at 8:00 p.m. It appears that Benfica is not the “A” team in Lisbon, which is a disservice to its supporters.

An early kick-off has also created some discontent among the Rangers support as there are a few obstacles in the way of arriving on time for kick-off. There’s the rush hour traffic and the prospect of an excruciating gridlock on the motorway to the game.

Then, at 5.30 p.m., there’s the Cheltenham final race, which will send Rangers fans crazy about horse racing running for their seats. Additionally, the game’s scheduling will undoubtedly interfere with the working day, giving players little time to get to the contest. The Ibrox team expressed dissatisfaction at the scheduled hour, but UEFA reigns supreme—as their city rivals Celtic are well aware given their 3.30pm kickoff versus Ferencvaros.
