Plans for a £250 million data centre in Salford, hailed as “critical” for the UK to preserve its position as a “global leader in technology,” have been approved.
Salford City Council approved the development, which is located on Peel Waters’ Halo West property between Eccles and Irlam.
Peel Waters had previously gained planning approval to redevelop the six-acre industrial property in July 2024, and since then, they have collaborated with Digital Land & Development on data centre planning.
The centers serve as physical storage spaces for online information, which is used for websites, applications, and digital services. The government has recognized them as “critical national infrastructure”.
The authorized structure has 12,000 square feet of offices, a 56,000 square foot data hall, and 63,500 square feet of plant.
The £250 million investment by Digital Land & Development will serve as a crucial driver inside the ‘City Gateway’, which includes Port Salford and the Salford Community Stadium and is targeted for additional considerable regeneration by both Peel Waters and the council.
Peel Waters’ development director for land and logistics, Peter Linstead, said: “We’re delighted that Salford City Council has acknowledged the need for this development at our Halo West site. Receiving unanimous agreement from the planning committee reflects a clear alignment between the public and private sectors in advancing creative growth prospects and delivering much-needed technical infrastructure in the region. We look forward to the completion of this development and the enormous investment it will bring to the area.”
Johnny Conway, director of digital land & development, added: “Digital Land & Development is excited to be bringing the site forward for a next generation data centre as one of a number of projects across the UK, which, given the increasing pace of data processing, is driving the necessary requirement for the data centre facilities that house and support this need. We’d like to congratulate Salford City Council for supporting this development, which will help the UK maintain its position as a worldwide technological leader.”
