Sunderland fired Michael Beale last month and has been without a permanent manager since, with Mike Dodds taking over in the interim.

Dodds has struggled to connect with the Black Cats, and his chances of remaining in the post are bleak.

The North East team has lost six consecutive games, dropping to 12th in the league, 11 points behind the play-offs.

This season’s chances of promotion to the Premier League are all but gone, as attention shifts to preparation for the next.

Sunderland chairman Kyril Louis-Dreyfus is interested in hiring William Still, the current manager of Reims.

Still, who turned 31 in October, has excelled in Ligue 1 throughout his brief coaching experience and is seen as the ideal candidate.

He has, however, acknowledged Eddie Howe as an influence, which may be rather contentious considering the Newcastle rivalry.

Will Still makes a dubious Eddie Howe allegation.

When asked who manager influenced him the most, Still responded, “I was inspired by everyone.” No coach is better than another. I believe there are many concepts from throughout the world of football that we can benefit from.

“Ancelotti, too, has done some strange things. But we also have Eddie Howe in Newcastle, who does an excellent job. You must strive to gather as much knowledge as possible in order to apply it and avoid relying just on one style.”

Sunderland fans will undoubtedly be disappointed with the response, but he appears to be the overwhelming favourite to become the next manager at the Stadium of Light.

Sunderland will need to wait for Will Still.

Sunderland’s season has entirely faded out in recent weeks, following a poor run of form that has placed them well below the play-off spots.

So perhaps their desire to choose a permanent management has subsided, since the appointment now appears to be scheduled for the summer.

Still has shown interest in managing Sunderland, stating that he would like to manage a team in the Championship. However, any potential hiring is unlikely until after the season ends.

The Belgian-born head coach has Reims in ninth place and a little chance of qualifying for Europe, so leaving the French club at this point is unlikely.
