Norwich City goalkeeping coach Tony Roberts on Angus Gunn.
Tony Roberts, Norwich City’s head of goalkeeping, believes Angus Gunn is a ‘great goalkeeper’.
The 29-year-old’s contract at Carrow Road expires in the summer, sparking fan speculation and doubts about his future from head coach Johannes Hoff Thorup.
Thorup has stated that discussions with Gunn will take place soon, although he is now free to sign a pre-contract with any international club. No movement has been made on a new agreement.
However, Roberts feels the Scottish international is a significant talent and has understood this since early in his career. He wants to remain out of contract talks, but understands why fans are so concerned about losing their first-choice goalkeeper.
“I’ve known Angus since he was 16, 17, when he was at Manchester City,” he told the Pink Un. “You could see then that he was going to be a terrific goalie, and he is a great goalkeeper. Obviously, he is Scotland’s number one.
“He’s still a baby in goalkeeping years, so he has a lot to learn, but we’re satisfied with him right now. Everything is going nicely.
“I delegate contractual decisions to higher-level authorities.” That is not my area, therefore I will clearly conduct the day-to-day work on the grass and provide feedback on where they are. But I will leave that to them.”
Roberts lauded the overall quality of his goalkeepers, including backups George Long and Vicente Reyes.
“We’ve got a good group,” he said. “We have a lot of young goalkeepers who have had an opportunity, so based on the work we’ve done, we have a solid department.
