Rangers’ Connor Goldson scores 3/10, but John Lundstram shines – Player ratings vs. Hibernian.
Rangers advanced to the Viaplay Cup semi-finals with a 2-0 triumph against nine-man Hibernian at Easter Road.
John Souttar bundled in from close range to give the Gers the lead in the 23rd minute, capitalizing on James Tavernier’s saved penalty.
Rangers had a few nervous moments, but Fabio Silva scored his second goal after Jordan Obita and Nathan Moriah-Welsh were sent off for the hosts.
Ibrox News rated each player out of 10 for their performance in Sunday’s (10 March) match.
Jack Butland – 6
Was nearly red-faced after failing to properly control a ball back to him, which Myziane Maolida pounced on and struck the post. Hibs struggled to get going, so there was only one save of importance to make. A clean sheet is a clean sheet, whatever.
Had a couple brilliant moments, but his most significant contribution to the match was his saved penalty. It took a long time to run up and take the spot-kick, but it appeared to work in David Marshall’s benefit since he guessed correctly.
Connor Goldson – 3
Butland will undoubtedly speak with Goldson about the pass played to him for the aforementioned Maolida opportunity. Also battled with possession, giving the ball away several times. He performed well defensively but was the worst of the Gers’ back four.
John Souttar – 6
Stronger defensively and more confident in possession. Hibernian did not make many attacking moves, but Souttar was watchful whenever the opponent moved forward.
Ridvan Yilmaz – 7
He was doubled up on at times in what appeared to be a premeditated attempt, but he reacted admirably and continued to get forward as normal, contributing to the clean sheet.
Mohamed Diomande – 6
He had one wonderful strike that was nearly missed, but he also had one or two clumsy moments in the heart of the pitch, which were most likely due to exhaustion.
John Lundstram – 8
After Tavernier’s penalty was saved, he shown tremendous awareness by pounced on the loose ball. Lundstram also set up Silva for the Gers’ second goal in another impressive midfield performance.
Dujon Sterling – 6
Rangers won the penalty after being clipped in the Hibernian box. He was a vibrant presence until he hobbled off before half-time, which might be a huge setback to Philippe Clement.
He found himself in numerous favorable positions, but he erred on a few of shots and had no significant impact on the fight.
Fabio Silva – 7.
He, like Lawrence, picked up the ball in favorable situations, and his patience paid off when he scored late in the game with a precise finish – his second goal of the competition. Another prominent aspect of his game was the power he displayed at times to fend off opponents.
He created a few opportunities for himself but was unable to demonstrate the quality necessary in front of goal. His best chance, a near-post shot, was blocked. These are the kinds of games that have some wondering if he is a long-term choice to lead the team.
