Versatile fullback Our Blackburn Rovers fan analyst has selected Callum Brittain as the one player he is surprised did not depart during the winter transfer window, citing his strong performances for the club since the start of the season.
Rovers’ manager, John Eustace, has led the team to fifth place in the Championship despite losing their key player, Sammie Szmodics, and bringing in largely loan and free signings throughout the summer.
Brittain, an ex-Barnsley defender, has been a significant player in the team’s recent play-off drive, as the manager has relied on multiple standouts rather than a single individual.
The 26-year-old is in his third season in BB2 after joining from the Tykes in 2022, and while he has usually been a consistent starter in recent years, his performances have risen to a new level this season, and our Rovers fan pundit is surprised he has stayed with the club past January.
Surprised issued at Callum Brittain remaining at Blackburn Rovers beyond January window
Brittain failed to break into the starting eleven during his first 27 Championship appearances at Blackburn, but became a regular presence under Jon Dahl Tomasson and Eustace last season, scoring one goal and assisting five times in 44 league games.
Eustace has trusted him to be his primary outlet at both right-back and right-wing-back this season, and with good reason, considering his remarkable performances, which have included a goal and three assists in 23 Championship appearances.
The 26-year-old has been a key player for Blackburn Rovers, earning Player of the Month in January for his contributions to the team’s success.
Our Blackburn fan pundit, Simon Middlehurst, says Brittain has been Rovers’ greatest player this season and is shocked that the full-back is still at the club after the transfer window.
“The one player that I think a lot of Blackburn fans are happy that we kept is Callum Brittain,” Simon told the press.
“This season, he has truly come into his own and has unquestionably been Blackburn’s best player.
“The fact that he is still with us is fantastic, and the fact that we have managed to keep him surprises me, given the apparent interest from other clubs.
“That’s one player that we are really happy with.”
Brittain seems fully focused on pushing on with Blackburn this season
Rovers’ fortunes have dipped in recent weeks, with only two league wins in their previous eleven games, but Brittain has continued to impress despite the team’s lack of points in recent months.

Eustace’s team won a crucial game against Preston North End to stay in the play-off race. After the game, he expressed his confidence in his teammates’ ability to achieve their goal at the end of the season, as well as his appreciation for the fans’ support.
“Obviously, off the back of three losses, we really wanted to go out there for the fans and get the three points,” he told the club’s media.
“We focus on the next game; it’s a rigorous pace. On Tuesday, we face another difficult away game, but we are fully confident. If you can put together a little run, you will go a long way in this league.
“We continue to work hard on the training pitch; we are a close-knit bunch, and we hope this form continues. We’re excited to get three points against them for the fans.
“To be honest, despite our terrible run, our performances have been good. The gaffer simply stated, “Keep grafting, keep working for each other, and those three points will come.”
“We simply need to get the correct balance, but the performances are there. I’m quite proud of that performance and glad for the fans.”
That connection with said fans is probably something that has been lacking with players at Ewood Park in recent years, but Brittain is one of the leading lights in a revival under manager Eustace, and both he and Rovers fans will be relieved that the 26-year-old’s time at the club has not ended in recent weeks.
