NHL Rumours: Boston Bruins and New Jersey Devils
There are still plenty NHL rumors circulating, even after the trade deadline has passed. We’re still coping with the consequences of last week’s events. That does not, however, imply that the NHL rumors will end. While some agreements might have to wait until the summer, others were on the verge of closing. There are rumors about a Swedish goalie in the NHL today. In today’s edition, we have the New Jersey Devils and the Boston Bruins.

Analysis: The Bruins’ success this season has been largely attributed to the combination that Ullmark and Jeremy Swayman have developed. Conversely, it might not be a viable paradigm. At the conclusion of the season, Swayman will be a restricted free agent eligible for arbitration. He will most likely fetch far more than his current cap hit of $3.475 million. The Bruins would have had enough money if they had traded Ullmark, likely allowing them to offer Swayman the deal he deserves. In addition, Boston would have had more options than only signing Pat Maroon before the deadline.
Weekes suggested geography might have been a factor in Ullmark’s decision to reject a transaction. If management decides to deal him, the Swedish goalie may essentially choose where he wants to go with his 16-team no-trade list. Furthermore, when asked if Ullmark vetoed a deal using the no-trade clause, General Manager Don Sweeney remained silent. Sweeney told the media, “I mean, at the end of the day, I’m not ever going to get into a conversation with what I may have talked to Linus about.”
There are those who would be irritated that Ullmark did not choose to join a franchise like the Kings, where he would have been the undisputed starting goalie. But there were probably other variables at work besides hockey. Ullmark is likewise entitled to choose his own destination. The agreement he worked out with Sweeney and the Bruins organization included those safeguards.
It also seemed the Ullmark and Swayman still love the partnership. Swayman was quick to say “Stay right there” or “You’re staying here” after the Bruins Saturday afternoon victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins. It seems that the goalie union is safe for now, but the summer could be a different story.
New Jersey Devils
Analysis: Jake Allen was acquired by New Jersey just in time for the deadline. This might have just been a short-term solution to get through the season, though. Prior to the upcoming season, New Jersey will probably want to strengthen the goaltender position. Akira Schmid and Nico Daws are competing to become the next great goalie. Therefore, General Manager Tom Fitzgerald’s primary concern is finding a solution for the current goalie.
Since other goalies were cut in the summer, Markstrom appeared to be the Devils’ top target. At the trade deadline, Calgary did ship out a handful of players, including Elias Lindholm and Noah Hanifin. Markstrom appeared to be departing as well. On the other hand, Craig Conroy, General Manager, was unable to find a suitor.
The seasoned goaltender had expressed his displeasure with Flames administration on the way the rumors were handled. Conroy, though, is optimistic that he can repair his connection with his best goalie.
Conroy’s decision to deal pending unrestricted free agents at the deadline is not to be blamed. It’s possible that he wished to avoid a situation similar to Johnny Gaudreau’s, in which he departed Alberta for no reason. With a $6 million cap cost, Markstrom’s contract has two more years left on it. But he might receive a good return, and Dustin Wolf would also benefit from this.
There may be more roster turnover in Calgary. We might only be taking a brief break before picking back up in the summer.
