After losing to Tottenham 4-0 at home on Saturday, City’s hopes of winning the Premier League title were severely
damaged.
According to the league’s statistics provider Opta, a fifth consecutive loss across all competitions was the worst losing
streak for an English defending champion since Chelsea in 1956.
During his trophy-filled coaching career at Barcelona, Bayern Munich, and City, manager Pep Guardiola had never
lost four straight games. However, following a humiliating loss at the Etihad Stadium, that record has now been
extended to five.
The league stated that it was just the second time Guardiola had suffered a four-goal defeat at home, the first being a
4-0 defeat against Real Madrid in 2014 while serving as Barcelona’s coach. It stated that City’s 5-1 loss to Arsenal was
their worst home defeat since 2003.
Four-time champion City let two goals in the opening 20 minutes and two more after the interval against a furious Tottenham.
James Maddison gave Spurs the lead with goals in the 13th and 20th minutes in Guardiola’s first game after he
extended his contract by a further two years. In the 52nd minute, Tottenham’s Pedro Porro added a third goal, and in
the third minute of extra time, replacement Brennan Johnson finished the thumping.
League leader Liverpool, who take on last-place Southampton on Sunday, is five points ahead of City.
